Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2023 Successfully Held
#7 Arya Zhang Shines as Dual Crown WinnerThe "Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2023," organized by Fairchild TV, co-organized by Talentvision TV, Fairchild Radio, and PLEM Magazine, successfully took place at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto on Dec 2.
The winner of this year is #7 Arya Zhang, who delivered an outstanding performance and also received the "Kingscross Hyundai Miss Photogenic Award." The first runner-up, #2 Jennifer Choi, not only secured the second position but also won the "Air Canada Miss Congeniality Award" and the "Time Art Auction Best Performance Art Award," making her a triple awardee. The third place went to #1 Yolanda Chen, while #8 Irene Li, received the "Bigen Silky Hair Award." The champion, Arya, was crowned by last year's winner, Miss Nicole Xu, and paraded around, receiving congratulations from the audience.

The theme of the finale was "Multiple Universes," where the contestants took the audience on a journey through different universes, providing various surprises. The competition features talent performances, swimsuit Q&A, and a fashion show. The professional judging panel included renowned TV & radio host, Mr. Chung Ming Poon, Professor at the University of Toronto Medical School & Scarborough Health Network, head of ophthalmology and chief ophthalmologist, Dr. Ying Lu, famous photographer, Mr. Franklin Lau, and 1st runner-Up, Miss Chinese International Pageant 2002 & Champion, Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2001, Ms. Christie Bartram. The event's auditor was Mr.Alexis Yam, CA. The hosting lineup featured Mr. Leo Shiu, Mr. Albert Cheung, Mr. Matthew Mui and Ms. Oi-Yiu Wong, creating an exciting night together.

The hosting lineup featured Mr. Leo Shiu, Mr. Albert Cheung The hosting for Interlude lineup featured Mr. Matthew Mui and Ms. Oi-Yiu The event featured special performances by TVB artiste Him Law, who travelled from Hong Kong for the first time as a special guest, and singer-songwriter Laird Zhou. Laird showcased his dedication to Cantonese by singing " This Life This Time" and his self-composed piece." Him presented three Cantonese songs, the eight contestants appeared as dancers, creating a stunning and elegant presentation.
Appreciation was expressed to sponsors and the audience for their strong support of the "Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2023." To give back to the audience, five lucky draw segments were held during intermission, and the winners left with prizes, including a grand prize of an economy-class airline ticket sponsored by Air Canada, valid for any destination worldwide.

The 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held its award ceremony at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, bringing this year's film festival to a fulfilling conclusion. The 2023 People's Choice Award is the most prestigious award each year, often seen as an indicator for the Oscars. The award-winning films this year exhibit great diversity, encompassing topics such as indigenous communities, ethnic minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Andy Lau
This year's film festival marked a highly anticipated moment for cinephiles. After an absence of twenty years, the celebrated Hong Kong actor, Andy Lau, made a return to Toronto. Accompanied by director Ning Hao for their latest collaboration, 'The Movie Emperor,' they were honoured to accept the Special Tribute Award from the film festival—a testament to their exceptional contributions to the movie industry.
Andy Lau stands as one of Hong Kong's most cherished artists, transcending both television and film, leaving an indelible mark on generations of Chinese audiences. Over the past four decades, he has consistently been a prominent figure in the Asian film industry, boasting a filmography comprising more than 160 works. In 1982, Andy Lau earned his first Hong Kong Film Award nomination for Best New Actor with Ann Hui's "Boat People." His performances in Wong Kar-wai's "As Tears Go By" (1988) and "Days of Being Wild" (1990) received widespread acclaim. He continued to excel in a variety of roles, including Johnnie To's crime thriller "Running Out of Time," Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's crime drama "Infernal Affairs" and "Infernal Affairs 3", Zhang Yimou's martial arts epic "House of Flying Daggers," Tsui Hark's fantasy detective film "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame," and Ann Hui's heartwarming drama "A Simple Life". Each character he portrayed bore the mark of his nuanced and captivating performances, solidifying his enduring legacy in the realm of cinema.
The 5th “Chinese Film Panorama”
The "Chinese Film Panorama," aimed at promoting Chinese cinema, marked its fifth consecutive appearance at TIFF, becoming a significant platform for artistic and industry exchanges of Chinese filmmaking. Continuing the tradition of martial arts film
"In a martial arts film, martial skills are crucial, and chivalry is indispensable," Chinese director Xu Haofeng, known for his expertise in crafting martial arts movies. With his latest work, "100 Yards", he aims to bring this message to the audience. The film adheres to the consistent style of the Xu brothers' martial arts films and this time, teams up with renowned actors Bea Hayden, Taiwan, and Jacky Heung from Hong Kong. Together, they bring a variety of authentic combat scenes to the audience and show how martial arts carry righteousness.
Asian Young Director
"The Breaking Ice" is the first film shot in mainland China by Singaporean Chinese director Anthony Chen. Starring popular young Chinese actors Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran, and Qu Chuxiao, the film weaves a narrative around three ordinary young individuals who discover solace in one another. The director skillfully conveys a profound sense of warmth and emotional depth in the coldest of times.
New Wave of Mandarin Movies
《Snow Leopard》
The posthumous work of the renowned Chinese director Pema Tsedenhas, he has led Tibetan film to become an important force in contemporary Chinese movies. This film tells the story of a snow leopard's attack on nine goats, owned by local herders, which triggers a conflict between a father and his son. It explores the relationship and interdependence between humans, animals, and the natural world on the high plateau.《Youth》
Director Wang Bing's documentary, spanning a decade in the making, delves into the multifaceted lives of a group of young individuals within a textile factory on the outskirts of Shanghai. On his third visit to Toronto, Lee Byung-hun graced the red carpet alongside his new creation, "Concrete Utopia." This film, directed by Chinese-American female director Lulu Wang, is an adaptation of the novel "The Expatriates" by a Korean-American author, who was born in Hong Kong. Oscar winner Kate Winslet brings a descriptive film set in France in 1938, the story follows Lee Miller, a former model who grows tired with being objectified through the male gaze and instead fully embraces her career as a photographer. During the outbreak of war, Lee ventures into concentration camps to capture a series of photographs destined to become historic. 《The Boy and Heron》
Crafted by Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki, draws inspiration from Genzaburo Yoshino's 1937 novel. It narrates the journey of a 15-year-old boy who, under the mentorship of his college-educated uncle, embarks on a quest to explore themes such as friendship, economic inequality, discrimination, bullying, and the intricate dynamics between individuals and society. The “2023 Mandarin Profile Award Online Voting,” organized by Fairchild Television, Fairchild Radio and Popular Lifestyle & Entertainment Magazine ended on May 7th. A simple yet grand award ceremony was held on June 3rd to express gratitude to the customers for their strong support and commendation of the winners.
The “2023 Mandarin Profile Award Online Voting” consisted of 5 award categories and the Mandarin Profile Best of the Best Award, with a total of 10 winners, including Glenn Wang and Eddie Lee, winners of the Business Leaders Award; Eddie Lee also received the Mandarin Profile Best of the Best Award; Mia Zhang and Wei Yulu, winners of the Female Elites Award; Pierre Chen and Cai Kui, winners of the Social Contribution Award; Jerry Su, Ryan Chen and Raymond Zhao, winners of the Immigrant Elites Award; Leo Li and Bruce Zhang, winner of the Creative Inspiration Award. It has been three years! The highly anticipated ‘TVB Fairchild Fans Party’ at long last, has once again made its way to Canada, bringing with it a remarkable lineup.
Organized by Fairchild Television, and co-organized by TVB, Talentvision, Fairchild Radio and Popular Lifestyle & Entertainment Magazine, the annual 'TVB Fairchild Fans Party' was held on May 25th at 8pm at the John Basset Theatre in downtown Toronto. Four of TVB’s hottest stars, Ben Yuen, Sisley Choi, Shaun Tam, and Elaine Yiu, alongside Masters of Ceremonies Poon Chung Ming (Poon Sir) and Oi Yiu Wong, delivered a remarkable and unforgettable evening filled with music and laughter to audience members.
The party kicked off with four winners of the “New Talent Singing Awards (Toronto)” and “Vocalibre” performing theme songs from TVB dramas “The Righteous Fists” and “Forensic Heroes V”. Their beautiful voices resonated throughout the theater, and the audience responded along with the rhythm of the songs, then followed by the four TVB stars. Theme songs played as the stars appeared onstage and each threw autographed T-shirts into the crowd. The works of the four stars are deeply rooted in the hearts of audience members.
Hosts Chung-ming Poon (Poon Sir) and Oi-yiu Wong engaged in conversations with the four stars about recent events. It was the first time Elaine Yiu join this event: "Toronto audiences are so enthusiastic!" she excitedly said and hoped to visit again in the future. She then performed two of her favorite songs and even hopped into the crowd shaking hands with the fans to take pictures, and audience immediately went crazy. She also reminded the audience to stay tuned on her new drama " Night Beauties", which is now airing on FTV2.
Ben Yuen, who dressed up stylishly, had audiences chanting for their 'prince charming'. He surprised the audience with three of his co-wrote songs. Fans are getting more and more excited as he sang, and the atmosphere soared, he exclaimed, "I'm so happy!" Sisley Choi, on the other hand, presented two popular and warm-hearted songs.
Shaun Tam, who returned to Toronto for the second time, was deeply moved last night, as this place reminded him of his days in boarding school in Toronto, and how excited he returned to where he first started. As a father of two kids, he feels that people in Toronto are becoming happier, he asked the audience, "If my daughter came to study here, would you take care of her?", and received an overwhelming response from the audience. He also showed off his singing skills by serenading the audience with ‘Yesterday’ to his excited fans, a song that he loves during his studies in Toronto.
The highlight of the party was several lucky fans had the honor to go on stage to play games with their idols.
Games include: (1) using various tools such as chopsticks and spatulas to assemble puzzles featuring the logos of Fairchild Television, TVB, Talentvision and Fairchild Television’s 30th anniversary. (2) Rolling balls into scoring tubes on two ropes, Sisley Choi and the audience cooperated perfectly to win. (3) Rearranging the titles of four TVB dramas on 16-word puzzles, and all the fans passed the challenge without a miss! (4) Four stars and four lucky audiences participated in three mini-games: bursting balloons, stacking champagne glasses, and folding paper airplanes. These lucky participants were selected among all the audiences through a fun-filled process of an elimination game.
When it was time for goodbye, the quartet went into the audience to pass out gifts, and take a few selfies. Once again, the audience immediately went crazy. The annual TVB Fairchild Fans Party ended with the four stars taking a group selfie on stage with audience members. It was certainly a night that everyone will remember for a very long time.
